Gold Presidential Coins - $175 for full set. Is it worth it?
I just bought the first four coins of the new presidential coin collection because I thought it would be cool. (I'm not a coin collector and this would be my first collection.) I paid approximately $12 for the first four coins plus a nice leather holding case, straight from the mint. The coins have not been in circulation and have a clear display capsule.
My question is if I should order the remaining 36 for the entire set of 40. They want $162 for the remaining coins.
In your opinion, is it a wise investment? If I don't order the uncirculated coins now in the clear capsules will the mint offer that deal again? Should I wait and just collect coins that have been circulated and put them in the collection?
Any advice is appreciated.
Answer:
It isn't worth it. First "The Mint" is a private company, *not* the US mint who makes all our normal coins. They do this as a business.
You've got four gold quarters, I assume? That cost them $1, plus about 5 cents per coin for the gold plating (It can be just a few atoms thick). The rest was shipping, handling and profit to the company.
These are not "gold coins". The US Mint stopped making those more than 40 years ago.
What you have is pretty to look at, but please, consult a book on stamps and coins, and you'll find that people often sell things like this at far less than they paid for them.
Still, I've got a set myself, and I enjoy looking at them. But as an investment? You could do much better elsewhere.
